Association Research Foundation entitled Membrane Concentrate
Disposal. It was published in late 1993 and is now out of
print. Copies of the book, however, may be ordered through AWWA

The emphasis is on
characterizing membrane concentrate, design and costing of disposal
options, permitting of discharge options, and the identification
and investigation of issues - technical and nontechnical - surrounding
concentrate disposal. The work also includes a detailed survey
of each membrane drinking water plant over the size of 25,000
gpd in the United States. From the Executive Summary: "There are
challenges associated with the lack of understanding and knowledge
about technical and nontechnical issues surrounding concentrate
disposal. These challenges should be addressed now to ensure that
the tremendous potential of membrane processes to produce drinking
water is achieved in a cost-effective and environmentally safe
way."
